Editorial Review for Ton Kiang – by Peggy Knickerbocker

The Scene
This not-so-subtle urban spread boasts two floors of brightly lit tables in a sleek, sparsely decorated dining space. This 250-seat restaurant stays busy from morning till night. Surprisingly, Ton Kiang is still manageable and sedate compared with some of the Bay Area's truly gigantic dim sum parlors.

The Food
Best known for Hong Kong-style dim sum, there's also a Hakka-focused menu offered at dinnertime. Highlights include minced squab with lettuce leaves and velvety salt-baked chicken. Specialties such as delicate seafood clay-pot casseroles are sure to please. An endless parade of dim sum dishes stream out of the kitchen--adventurous diners can eat for a half hour and not see repeat items. Standard favorites are well-represented, such as perfect pork buns and steamed dumplings stuffed with delicate fillings like scallop, shrimp, green chive or pea tips. Heads-on roasted shrimp are sensationally smoky, and crisp-skinned duck is meltingly tender.

I have never written a review before but my family had the worst experience here with the owner that I have to say something about this place. We didn't even dine in, but ordered take out. Since we made a large order, we wanted to check and make sure everything we ordered was included and nothing was missing. The owner (or I'm assuming he was) wouldn't even let us check our order. He rudely told us everything is there, and if something was missing he will cover the cost. Since we couldn't check our order, we took the food and left. When we got home, we realized in fact they did forget one of our orders. We called back to let him know, and he accused us of being dishonest and hung up on us. What AWFUL ATTITUDE, SERVICE, AND BLATANT DISRESPECT TOWARDS CUSTOMERS! And the food was just OK. We will never give this restaurant our business again!
